Stocks notched their fifth straight winning month in August, and all three major indexes remain solidly positive for the year. It was a genuinely good month for portfolios, even though it ended on a bumpy note — a reminder that the path higher is rarely a straight line.
The biggest shift worth knowing about: for most of the year, investors expected the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates. Late in August, the Fed's chair signaled that prices are still rising faster than policymakers would like, and now there's real talk of the Fed raising rates instead at its next meeting. That matters day-to-day because it touches things like mortgage rates, savings account yields, and the cost of borrowing — if rate cuts are delayed or reversed, some of those costs may stay higher for longer than expected.
Renewed U.S. military action in the Middle East also pushed oil prices higher in the final days of the month, which added to the uncertainty and contributed to a softer close. On the brighter side, continued strong results from major technology and AI-related companies kept giving the Nasdaq a lift, and remain one of the more durable stories of the year. For long-term investors, the takeaway is the same as always: headline-driven swings like these are normal, and they're rarely a reason to change course on their own.
Key Deadlines & Reminders
Q3 estimated taxes are due September 15 — if you make quarterly estimated payments, mark the date so you avoid an underpayment penalty.
Year-end planning window is opening — September is a good time for us to start looking at tax-loss harvesting and Roth conversion opportunities before things get busy in Q4.
Extension filers, Oct 15 is coming up — if you filed for an extension back in April, your final federal filing deadline is next month.
Check in on retirement contributions — with about four months left in the year, it's worth a quick look at whether you're on pace to hit your 2026 401(k) or IRA contribution goals.
