September brought a notable shift: the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in three years, a move that caught many investors off guard. Stocks wobbled on the news, and bond yields — a signal of how expensive it is to borrow money — climbed to levels not seen in over two decades. The encouraging part is that this happened because the economy has been growing faster than expected, not because of a hidden weakness beneath the surface.
Despite that surprise, technology and AI-related companies continued to carry the market higher, while sectors that are more sensitive to interest rates — think utilities, financial, and property-focused stocks — lagged behind. Different corners of the market respond differently to the same headline, which is exactly why we build diversified portfolios in the first place.
For most households, one month of headlines isn't a reason to change course. If you're wondering how this shift in interest rates touches something specific in your plan — a mortgage, a bond allocation, or anything else — that's worth a quick conversation, and I'm happy to walk through it with you.
KEY DEADLINES & REMINDERS
Extension filer deadline — If you filed for a tax extension back in April, your federal return is due October 15.
Medicare Open Enrollment opens — Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, so now's a good time to review your plan options for next year.
Year-end tax-loss harvesting window — With markets moving more than usual this year, the fourth quarter is a good time to review your portfolio for opportunities to offset gains.
Open enrollment season approaching — Many employers hold benefits open enrollment in November, so it's worth getting a head start on reviewing your FSA, HSA, and retirement plan elections.
